The course is known for great playing conditions and a fun layout including its signature hole #5, a short par 4 played from an elevated tee. The course sits a few blocks from the ocean and is built on ancient sand dunes and links land re-claimed from the sea.
Manzanita Golf Course was designed and built by Ted Erickson and opened in 1987. His son, Steve Erickson, operated it until retirement toward the end of 2017.
In early 2018, Matt J. Brown, Gearhart, OR resident and Oregon PGA Professional, acquired the property. Per the course website, the new owner has always hoped that Manzanita remained a fun, well maintained, and sustainable golf course for many years to come.
This very manageable par 4 sets the tone for the round.
Historic Moment – It is on this green that the Landiño Miracle Putt clinched a sudden death playoff victory in 2015.
A reachable green off the tee is protected by a left side bunker. Care is required as an out of bounds runs the length of the right hand side.
A difficult and narrow par 3. There is a bunker front left and a harrowing tree line along the right. Take sufficient club and play to the heart of the green.
The bold shot for long drivers is to aim just over the left tree line. Take plenty of club allowing for the elevation of the green.
The tee shot is from an elevated position with the entire hole in view. Beware the right greenside bunker, where, in an act of desperation, Randy Haj famously putted out of the sand.
Historic Moment – The 2018 sudden death playoff ended as Kepa Zugazaga walked in a 6 footer for birdie.
Aim for the right hand side of the green on this short but challenging par 3, and take plenty of club to punch through the headwind.
The shot should be placed towards the right hand side of the green as the left is protected by a greenside bunker. The green is generous, flat, and not overly difficult.
Off the tee, aim left of center to play into the dogleg left. A narrow runway up to the green between bunkers plays favorable to wormburners.
Historic Moment – Kyle Tull bladed a six iron across the green from this fairway to make eagle and chance his team into a victory in 2020.
A lateral water hazard runs along the right hand side of this long and difficult par 3. Get ready to be heckled from the greenside grandstands.
